Environmentally Friendly Landscaping Materials are set to arrive at Lynwood Build Site on Earth Day, April 22nd

Los Angeles, CA -- April 22, 2009: Earth Day inspires a variety of initiatives to preserve the environment and this year Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles is fortunate to be on the receiving end of one such call to action. Union Pacific Railroad has generously offered to donate environmentally friendly materials for use in the landscaping for a three-home neighborhood in the City of Lynwood. The donation includes rubber, recycled mulch and water conserving plant and flower species and, in conjunction with the sustainable elements Habitat for Humanity has included in the homes’ designs, the homeowners will have significantly lower utility bills. The delivery will arrive at 9:30 am on Earth Day, April 22nd, at the City of Lynwood build site.

WHO: Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles & Union Pacific Railroad

WHAT: Environmentally-Friendly Landscape Materials Delivery To Habitat For Humanity Site

WHEN: EARTH DAY 2009
Wednesday, April 22, 2009
9:30 am

WHERE: 4267 Fernwood Ave, Lynwood CA 90262

WHY: Earth Day is a great excuse to reflect on the need for sustainable housing, especially in the area of affordable housing for low-income families. Habitat for Humanity of Greater L.A. has been implementing sustainable elements into its new construction and was recently awarded LEED Silver certification on 30 homes built during the 2007 Jimmy Carter Work Project. Union Pacific Railroad’s donation demonstrates their commitment to helping change the lives of hardworking families in the community. Los Angeles continues to rank last in housing affordability in the U.S. and by taking steps to build wisely, Habitat for Humanity is not only making homeownership a reality for low-income families, the organization is making it even more affordable than ever before.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY OF GREATER LOS ANGELES strives to eliminate poverty housing through advocacy, education and partnership with families in need to build simple, decent affordable housing. Since 1990, HFH GLA has built nearly 500 homes nationally and internationally, transforming the lives of hundreds of individuals. For more information, visit www.habitatla.org
