Los Angeles, CA – February 26, 2010: Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles and the City of Lynwood have been working hard on the city’s first green building project since they broke ground on ten sustainable homes in September 2009. The City of Lynwood has been a valuable partner for HFH GLA and on Saturday, February 27, 2010 they will join volunteers for a Lynwood City build day. From 8:00 am to 3:00 pm city employees, including Mayor Maria Theresa Santillan and Mayor Pro-tem Aide Castro will be at the site of ten new sustainable, affordable homes to assist with construction alongside Habitat partner families and volunteers.

WHO: Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles, Mayor Santillan, Mayor Pro-tem Castro & City of Lynwood Employee Volunteers

WHAT: City of Lynwood Build Day

WHEN: Saturday, February 27, 2010
8:00 am to 3:00 pm

WHERE: 4237 N Imperial Hwy, Lynwood, CA 90262
(News van parking available on site)

WHY: The Mayor and Mayor Pro-tem of Lynwood, city employees, family and friends will all be on site furthering progress on their city’s first green neighborhood. Ten sustainable homes are being built to LEED Silver specifications, which will result in lower utility bills for the ten partner families who have been selected to live in these homes. All of the partner families are working to complete their 500 hours of sweat equity and will pay back a zero- interest loan. The city has worked hard to offer the opportunity for homeownership and subcontracted jobs to Lynwood residents and businesses and hopes to become a model for other cities. Since partnering together, HFH GLA has completed three new homes and rehabilitated ten others in Lynwood for low-income families.

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles strives to eliminate poverty housing through advocacy, education and partnership with families in need to build simple, decent, affordable and sustainable housing. Since 1990, HFH GLA has built and renovated over 600 homes locally and worldwide, transforming the lives of hundreds of individuals. HFH GLA is a GuideStar® Valued Partner.
