HABITAT FOR HUMANITY HOME IMPROVEMENT STORE FEATURED ON SEASON PREMIERE OF “GARAGE MAHAL” TO PROMOTE REUSE

As of: 4-09-2010
Los Angeles, CA – April 8, 2010: Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles (HFH GLA) will be featured in the season premiere of “Garage Mahal” (DIY Network) hosted by pro-athlete Bill Goldberg and featuring Darren Moore, known as the EcoMacGyver. As a longtime supporter of Habitat for Humanity, Moore worked with them to send several truckloads of materials to the Habitat Home Improvement Store to be sold for reuse. The one-hour episode debuts on the DIY Network April 9th at 6:00 pm PDT.

“We are so thrilled to receive so much support from the community and professionals like Darren Moore to bring attention to our Home Improvement Store,” says Erin Rank, President/CEO, HFH GLA. “Our retail store has become a huge asset for the community and it has afforded us the opportunity to help so many more hard working families in Greater Los Angeles.”

The Home Improvement Store opened in Gardena in 2004 and has been incredibly successful for the organization. Each year the store collects new and gently used items from builders, retailers and the public and sells them at half of retail. The store helps divert several hundreds of thousands of tons of materials from local landfills while providing an affordable retail solution for the community. All items are donated and 100% of proceeds help HFH GLA build affordable housing and help more families in the community.

“Habitat For Humanity is an invaluable resource for my eco-friendly projects, whether it be as a place to salvage and send good usable materials such as appliances, cabinetry, doors, general building materials and other permanent accessories, it’s also a place to shop for near new and vintage items,” says Darren Moore. “Habitat Stores not only save me and my clients money, but they employ and educate thousands of people on good building principles, while providing affordable housing!”

In the season opener of “Garage Mahal” Jay Leno gives the team exclusive access to his home for their biggest garage renovation. The Tonight Show host and his wife Mavis turn to DIY Network host Bill Goldberg and his “Garage Mahal” team to transform his unruly six-car, three room space into an incredible masterpiece. The team gives the Lenos unbelievable his and hers garages complete with technology out of a James Bond film. For more information on DIY Network’s “Garage Mahal,” visit www.DIYnetwork.com.
