Dumpster Dives Occur Monthly as part of Company’s Commitment to Mission Zero®
Los Angeles, Calif. – April 22, 2010: Bentley Prince Street, Inc. is a recognized leader in commercial carpet design and sustainable practices. Each month associates volunteer to “dumpster dive” to improve sustainability practices at its LEED®-EB Silver Certified Los Angeles manufacturing facility. This month, thirteen associates from various departments volunteered to dive into trash from the facility’s Tufting, Quality Assurance and Cutting departments. The team sorted through 655 pounds of trash, recovering 5.3 pounds of recyclables. This month’s dumpster dive, just in time for Earth Day’s 40th anniversary, highlights the company’s commitment to Mission Zero.
April’s dumpster dive yielded 5.3 pounds of recyclables consisting of: 1 pound of plastic, 1 pound of plastic cups and bottles, 2 pounds of cardboard, some tape cardboard cores, 0.5 pounds of wood, 0.2 pounds of office paper, and 0.5 pounds of hard scraps.
“This program is a favorite among our associates because it’s fun and competitive,” says Kimbrely Matsoukas, Sustainability Manager. “Departments volunteer each month and we dumpster dive in the morning then post the statistics that afternoon for all to see. It has a great impact because our associates really get into the competitive spirit of it!”
Mission Zero is Bentley Prince Street’s promise to the planet. Every creative, manufacturing and building decision made will move the company closer to eliminating any negative impact it may have on the environment by the year 2020. Bentley Prince Street’s continual journey to sustainable commerce means examining, improving and innovating in every area of the business, including manufacturing processes and product design. It's an underlying corporate value, ensuring that business decisions are weighed against their potential impact on the economic, natural and social systems we touch.
Bentley Prince Street encourages its associates to recognize and respond to opportunities for recycling and re-use of materials. Re-usable supplies are donated to the Del Haven Community Center, a non-profit social service organization that offers programs to children and developmentally disabled adults. Graphed results of April’s dumpster dive, and those of previous months, can be found at the Bentley Prince Street blog, Designing for Life.
