Over 300 Women in Pink Will 'Build Green' for Habitat for Humanity Partner Families
Los Angeles, CA – May 27, 2010: Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles’ (HFH GLA) most anticipated build event of the year, “Power Women, Power Tools,” will take place Saturday, June 12 in partnership with Hollywood for Habitat for Humanity and hundreds of professional women volunteers. Powerful, successful women from various sectors will take part in the 6th annual all-women build, many with limited building experience. The volunteers will work in two four-hour shifts on a variety of construction projects at the site of Habitat for Humanity’s new “green neighborhood” in the City of Lynwood. “Power Women, Power Tools” helps to increase awareness and cultivate support for HFH GLA to combat the affordable housing crisis in Greater Los Angeles.
Over the past five years this event has attracted influential women from the corporate, entertainment, education and faith sectors including California First Lady Maria Shriver; California Secretary of Service and Volunteering Karen Baker; Councilwoman Janice Hahn; Julie Bowen; Lauren Conrad; Cat Cora; Jennifer Grey; Paige Hemmis; Pauley Perrette; Raven-Symoné and more. Volunteers in pink t-shirts and hardhats come together for a special day of building homes and changing lives and in the process develop lasting friendships. Volunteers will help build 10 homes currently under construction in partnership with the Lynwood Redevelopment Agency. All HFH GLA newly constructed and rehabilitated homes are built to USGBC LEED Silver standards, significantly lowering utility expenses for Habitat partner families, ensuring even greater affordability.
“Power Women, Power Tools is our most popular event of the year and our power women really get into the spirit of empowerment,” says Erin Rank, President and CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles. “At last year’s event, volunteers framed walls for use in this neighborhood and it’s going to be exciting for returning volunteers to see that their hard work has resulted in the second story walls on some of these homes!”
Los Angeles is at the center of the nation’s housing crisis, ranking last in affordability of 223 major American cities and with 82,000 Angelinos homeless on any given night. This event will raise walls for homes; money for building and renovating, and awareness for the need for affordable housing so that every family is given the opportunity to have a simple, decent place to call home. This event is made possible by the hard work and dedication of host committee members, staff, sponsors and volunteers.
